What did Yeshua do?
What did Yeshua do
The rain slicked the neon-lit asphalt of downtown as the evening rush hour peaked. Inside the warmth of the Grace Fellowship community center, the committee sat around a glossy mahogany table, reviewing the blueprints for their new multi-million dollar sanctuary.
"The digital media wall alone will draw hundreds of young families," Elder Thomas said, pointing a gold pen at the rendering. He turned to the young associate pastor, Andrew. "It’s about relevance, Andrew. This is what it takes to impact the culture today."
Andrew looked down at the bracelet on his wrist—a faded woven band with the letters WWJD. It was a relic from his youth, a phrase so heavily marketed over the decades that it had almost lost its teeth. But tonight, looking at the soaring budget while the city's homeless population huddled under the highway overpass just three blocks away, the question felt dangerously sharp.
What would He actually do?
"Thomas," Andrew said carefully, "the sanctuary is beautiful. But the city is cutting funding for the downtown shelter next month. If we redirected even ten percent of the media wall budget, we could run the soup kitchen for three full years."
Thomas smiled patiently, the way an older man smiles at a naive child. "Andrew, we have to look at the big picture. We are under grace, not a legalistic mandate to fix every social ill. Jesus said the poor you will always have with you. Our job is to build the ministry so we can preach the message."
Andrew felt a cold knot form in his stomach. He opened his Bible, flipping past the comforting highlighted verses to the stark lines of the epistles.
"Whoever claims to live in him must live as Yeshua did." — 1 John 2:6
"But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves." — James 1:2
"He didn't just preach a message, Thomas," Andrew said, his voice dropping an octave. "He was the message. He didn't build grand structures while people starved on the doorsteps. He walked among them. He kept the Father's commands perfectly—showing mercy, breaking bread with the castaways, obeying the statutes of righteousness. If we claim to follow Him, we can't just wear His name like a badge while ignoring His footsteps."
"We are saved by faith, Andrew, not by running a soup kitchen," Thomas countered, his tone hardening.
"And James says faith without works is dead!" Andrew stood up, the chair scraping sharply against the linoleum. "We fool ourselves if we think 'What Would Jesus Do' is just a slogan for a bracelet or a sermon topic. It’s a literal command to copy His life. If we see our brothers in need and close our hearts to them, how does God's love abide in us? If we don't obey the Son, we remain under judgment."
The room went completely quiet. The other committee members stared at their folders, uncomfortable with the sudden disruption of their orderly meeting.
Thomas sighed, closing his leather folio. "The budget has already been approved by the board, Andrew. We have to move forward."
Andrew looked at the faces around the table—people who genuinely believed they were doing God's work, yet had insulated themselves from the actual lifestyle of the Master they proclaimed.
Slowly, Andrew reached down and unclasped the faded woven bracelet. He didn't need the reminder on his wrist anymore; he needed it in his actions. He picked up his coat.
"Where are you going?" Thomas asked as Andrew walked toward the door. "We still have to vote on the upholstery."
"The shelter needs volunteers to set up cots for the storm," Andrew said, his hand on the brass doorknob. He turned back, giving the committee one last, steady look. "I’m going to go find out what He would do."
He stepped out into the pouring rain, leaving the warmth of the boardroom behind, finally choosing to walk the narrow path of the One he served.
